Research into advanced materials has been at the heart of the University since its foundation in 1824, initially empowering Manchester's growth as the cotton manufacturing capital of the world.

The M4DE CDT offers a comprehensive training programme that focuses on developing interdisciplinary skills and expertise.

The four-year course includes taught technical components and professional skills training, as well as a PhD level research project.

The Centre draws on expertise in the bp International Centre for Advanced Materials (bp-ICAM), the Aerospace Research Institute and the Dalton Nuclear Institute, as well as from a number of academic staff who you can read about below.
